Numerical Modeling of Cyclic Deformation in Bulk Metallic Glasses

چکیده
Abstract: In this paper, a systematic numerical simulation was performed to elucidate the damage mechanisms in bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) subjected to the tension-compression cyclic loading, and then the relation between fatigue life, applied strain, and cycling frequency was therefore presented. The free volume was selected as an internal state variable to depict the shear-band nucleation, growth, and coalescence with the help of free volume theory, which was incorporated into the ABAQUS code via a user material subroutine UMAT. Under cyclic loading, the shear banding initiation mainly stems from the microstructure inhomogeneity in BMGs and, further, the effect of applied strain amplitude and cycling frequency was discussed. The present simulations will shed some light on the fatigue damage mechanisms and fatigue life evaluation of BMG structures.

Effective temperature dynamics of shear bands in metallic glasses.
We study the plastic deformation of bulk metallic glasses with shear transformation zone (STZ) theory, a physical model for plasticity in amorphous systems, and compare it with experimental data. In STZ theory, plastic deformation occurs when localized regions rearrange due to applied stress and the density of these regions is determined by a dynamically evolving effective disorder temperature....

At low temperatures, monolithic bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) exhibit high strength and large elasticity limits. On the other hand, BMGs lack overall ductility due to highly localized deformation mechanisms. Recent experimental findings suggest that the problem of catastrophic failure by shear band propagation in BMGs can be mitigated by tailoring microstructural features at different length sca...

Shear bands generally initiate strain softening and result in low ductility of metallic glasses. In this Letter, we report high-resolution electron microscope observations of shear bands in a ductile metallic glass. Strain softening caused by localized shearing was found to be effectively prevented by nanocrystallization that is in situ produced by plastic flow within the shear bands, leading t...

Size effect is of great importance in micro forming processes. In this paper, micro cylinder compression was conducted to investigate the deformation behavior of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) in supercooled liquid region with different deformation variables including sample size, temperature and strain rate. It was found that the elastic and plastic behaviors of BMGs have a strong dependence on ...
متن کاملUniversal slip dynamics in metallic glasses and granular matter – linking frictional weakening with inertial effects
Slowly strained solids deform via intermittent slips that exhibit a material-independent critical size distribution. Here, by comparing two disparate systems - granular materials and bulk metallic glasses - we show evidence that not only the statistics of slips but also their dynamics are remarkably similar, i.e. independent of the microscopic details of the material. By resolving and comparing...
